May 16, 2012 | Flower Meanings And Symbolism
Gladiolus flower is a genus of about 260 species of the Iridaceae family, with 250 out of the 260 species are native in South Africa. The name gladiolus comes from the Latin word gladius meaning “sword” – in reference to the flower’s leaves shape that looks like a sword. Though identified to be a native flower in South Africa, this flower has a span of history that reached not only from Africa but also in regions like Mediterranean, Europe and even Asia. Its name gladiolus alone is very influential to gladiolus symbolism. Being associated with the gladiators of Rome, gladiolus meaning includes honesty and integrity (representing the gladiator’s pride and integrity during battle) and strength (representing the gladiator’s brute force and unbelievable strength during the battle). Aside from gladiolus symbol associated with gladiators, gladiolus symbolism also includes infatuation or obsession – when given in a form of bouquet means that she pierced your heart with intensity.
Gladiolus is available in different color variations with pink being the most common color. This flower is an ideal gift to express or to encourage a friend that is facing huge problems. Color variation does not change gladiolus meaning either. Gladiolus also is the flower symbol for those who are born on the month of August, and for couples celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary.
