Iris is an abundant genus of flowers of about 260 species of flowering plants with pretty impressive flowers. This flower’s colorful history is being linked with the Greeks – the name iris comes from the Greek word which means “rainbow” as a representation of different color variations of this specie represents the colors of the rainbow. Also according to the Greeks, it was Iris, the Greek goddess of the rainbow where this flower was named – when Iris acted as the link that connects the heavens and the earth. Also from the beliefs of the Greeks, purple irises were used to be planted above the graves of every woman to summon the goddess of the rainbow Iris. This magical participation of this flower throughout history is influential to what iris meaning and symbolism in modern era.
According to the Victorian language of flowers, iris symbolism with its three-flowered petals is being associated with courage, faith and wisdom (symbolize what Greek goddess did to reunite the heavens and the earth). So to show some courage and wisdom to someone send them iris flowers (in different color combination of course). Iris symbol was also used by early painters in their artwork to convey detailed messages of bravery, faithfulness and wisdom in their works.
